A rare example of a Victorian engineering project depicted as a wood engraving on an unused folded sheet of writing paper printed by J. Whereat, Weston-super-Mare. Although the design is usually credited to James Dredge snr, the text gives the designer as his son, William, also an engineer. Work on the bridge commenced in 1847 but was terminated shortly thereafter by a storm and it was not until 1867 that a Pier was opened linking the island with the town.
