Description

Two invoices with crown engraved headings from Jonathan Shaw in July 1843 and Ann Shaw in February 1844. The former was the landlord at least as early as 1834 and this pair of invoices is unusual in giving a six month period in which he was succeeded by either his widow or his daughter. ***

Printed invoice with ms insertions and fine 18th century engraved heading of double-headed eagle in elaborate frame with port and claret decanters, tureen and grapes on paper watermarked with a crowned Britannia – the “Union” coach between Leeds and Kendal called at this inn c. 1780 ** (spilt on fold and edge weaknesses)

Ms invoice with engraved heading showing superb engraving of a young monarch printed for George Howson who is recorded as the landlord in 1802. The inn was Sheffield’s General Coach Office from where the “Royal Hope” left for London, the “Blucher” for Birmingham, the “Balloon” for Liverpool, the “Wellington” for Manchester, the “North Briton” for York and the “Royal Fleece” for Halifax ***
